Metvoro

Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know about metadata and how Metvoro handles your files.

General

Is Metvoro free?

Yes. Metvoro is free to use and needs no account. To keep it fast for everyone there is a fair-use limit on how many files one connection can analyse in a short time, and files can be up to 25 MB.

What is file metadata?

Metadata is information stored inside a file about the file itself, separate from what you see. Phones record the camera model, time and often the location in each photo. Office apps record authors, company names and editing history. PDFs record which apps created and converted them.

Can metadata prove when a photo or document was made?

No. It tells you what the device or app wrote, which is usually right but not guaranteed. Clocks can be set wrong, and free tools can change dates. Metvoro shows each date with where it came from and treats it as a claim, not proof.

Does Metvoro detect AI-generated images?

Only when the file itself says so. Some AI tools label their output with an industry-standard tag or save their generation settings, and Metvoro reports those labels. It doesn’t judge images by their pixels, and a file without a label tells you nothing either way.

Do you keep my files?

No. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, analysed in memory in an isolated process, and discarded as soon as the report is sent back. It is never written to disk and its contents are never logged. The report exists only in your browser tab.

Why does my photo show no location or camera details?

Many apps remove metadata to protect privacy. Messaging apps, social networks and many websites strip it on upload, and screenshots never had it. Location is also missing when location access is turned off for the camera.

How do I remove metadata before sharing?

After analysing a JPEG, PNG, PDF or Office file, use “Download clean copy” in the report. Metvoro removes the metadata, keeps the visible content unchanged, and re-checks the copy so you can see what’s left. Comments and tracked changes are content, so remove those in Office with File › Info › Check for Issues › Inspect Document.

Photos

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is the standard format cameras and phones use to store details inside a photo: the device model, lens, exposure settings, date and time, and GPS location if it was enabled.

How can I tell when a photo was taken?

Look for the original capture date (DateTimeOriginal) in the EXIF data. Metvoro shows it with its time zone if the device recorded one, and compares it with the GPS clock when both are present.

Does every photo have a location?

No. Location is only recorded if the camera had location access, and it is often removed when photos are shared through social networks and messaging apps.

Which photo formats are supported?

JPEG, PNG and HEIC, the format iPhones use by default. RAW, WebP and GIF files aren’t supported yet.

PDFs

What metadata does a PDF contain?

Usually a title, author, subject and keywords, the app that created the document, the software that produced the PDF, and creation and modification dates. Many PDFs also carry an XMP metadata packet with the same or extra details.

What’s the difference between the PDF creator and producer?

The creator is the app the document was written in, such as Word. The producer is the software that wrote the PDF file itself, such as a PDF printer or converter. They’re often different.

What does ‘saved in stages' mean?

PDFs can be updated by appending changes to the end of the file instead of rewriting it. This happens when forms are filled in, signatures added or the file is edited. Earlier versions may still be inside the file.

Can Metvoro verify a digital signature?

Not yet. Metvoro detects signatures and tells you how many there are. To check that a signature is valid, open the PDF in a PDF reader or a qualified validation service.

Office files

What hidden information is in a Word document?

Author and last editor names, company, template, total editing time, revision count, comments, tracked changes including deleted text, hidden text and sometimes file paths that include a computer username.

Are deleted tracked changes really still in the file?

Yes, until changes are accepted or rejected. Anyone who receives the file can turn on change tracking and read the deleted text and who deleted it.

Does Metvoro support old .doc, .xls and .ppt files?

Not yet. Metvoro reads the modern Office formats: .docx, .xlsx and .pptx. Password-protected Office files can’t be read either, because their contents are encrypted.

Removing metadata

What does a clean copy remove?

For photos: EXIF (device, settings, dates and GPS), XMP, IPTC, comments and Content Credentials. For PDFs: document properties, XMP packets and leftovers from earlier saves. For Office files: author, company, template, editing time, custom properties and internal timestamps.

Does cleaning change how my file looks?

No. The picture data in JPEG and PNG files is copied unchanged, without recompression. Documents keep all their pages, text and formatting. Photos keep their orientation and colour profile.

What isn’t removed?

Content. Comments, tracked changes, hidden sheets, speaker notes, form values and attachments are part of the document itself, so the report lists them and tells you where to remove them.

Can I clean HEIC photos?

Not yet. On iPhone, tap Share › Options and turn off Location before sending, or convert the photo to JPEG and clean that.
